Spring IS Coming... Honest!

It's -20 out there this morning, but sunny. It will warm up I'm sure.

Independence Day

Today marks the 96th anniversary of Estonian Independence; we train hard all year for this day when snowshoes get strapped on, poles are planted, and the march up the mountains begins. Once there, we let fly with the national anthem, voices carried away by the wind today. I brought my trumpet-- I had been practicing for a few weeks-- but it was surprisingly brisk on top, and the valves were sticking too much for any success.
From a balmy and sheltered 0 degree beginning...

... to an exposed...

... snowy...

... and blustery ascent.
I'd post a short movie but I can't figure out how to get it from my phone to the computer.

Walking on Water

It's been years since we had a nice ice over the bay. It also feels like years in between sunny days...

The cliffs look quite different this time of year...

Making tracks towards the sunset.

I'm Tellin' Ya'....

...If there were an Olympic Shovelling Team, I think I'd be a contender.
There seems to be a never-ending supply of training opportunities this year.

Everybody's getting buried...

...and the Winter Wonderland continues.

We left a bit too early, and were without moonlight for quite some time-- actually, we thought we may miss out becuase the clouds were moving in. This is Rabbit Snare Alley with flash.

Moon rising over the trees, lighting up Wood Cutter's Pond.
Nice light by the end of the ski over Lower Power Line Bog; going down Crazy Lady Hill was a bit of a laugh in the dark-- keep those knees bent and hope for the best. The tracks were icy and fast from the earlier rain... good times!
Hoping weather co-operates in about a month's time: Moonlit Blow-me-Down Tour being planned. Can't wait!

Oldsters and Fat Birds

The Fossils arrived on my lunch break, snowshoes and winter apparel in tow... so off we went, retraced my steps from yesterday's hike up the hill from my back steps and over the top to Gillams Big GD Bog and beyond.
Me Mudder, just about to crest the mountain...

...Himself, raring to traverse the Big GD Bog...

Being told how to pose for the camera... front-side facing...

Ohhh... that's how it's done.

Crossing the windswept bog... could go for miles and miles and miles on top of this area, woods, bogs, woods, bogs... perfect in the winter, great vanatge point. The far-side mountains did not come through in the photos, but they were clear to see.

And the sun broke through on our way back-- Weeball in the background, clear as day!

Greeted at the house by four Big Fat Birds in my smallest shrubs.

A Day To Fang About

Hard to see, but right at the middle of this image right above the treeline sits The Fang-- covered by blowing snow at that very moment.

We are on the way...

... and getting closer...

... sometimes not closer when we pick a different route and then come down it in a hurry...

...everybody's having fun, Old Sheppie hanging in there....

..a hah! Progress!!

Remarkable how much more snow there was in the few sheltered areas...

...we stopped for tea and chocolate amongst the snow pillows...

... view of the razor's edge of another peak when we were at the top-- lucky to get this, as the wind swept the snow cover back in seconds.

Hard to imagine that outside of this little spot, one's ears would fall off if uncovered from the stiff gusts, bluster everywhere.

The Buddies, finding never-ending routes to explore...

...crossing a wind-swept bog, after which the down was phenomenal.
I've only skiied up here in spring-skiing conditions before, and encountered icy snowmobile trails, narrow, hard to manouevre if one had to when on skiis... today, however, it was awesome on the down, even when the water from my eyes pooled behind the glasses making visibility even worse-- extra challenge to guess where the drops and the curves were, more tricky as we descended back into the denser woods. Lots of snow. Good times!

Fond farewell to the Fang from the farking fot.

It Was A Large and Sunny Day

Finally!! After what seems like months, the skies opened up wide and the sun lifted up the ceiling.

We were more stoked than usual about the break this afternoon... today, we were on the sunny side of the slopes-- in the video, you can see-- for a brief time-- across the valley where we were yesterday. Even though it's always a good time to be outside, what a difference the sunshine makes!
